Description:

John Taylor returns with aasp’s most popular webinar tradition! In keeping with custom, John will address legal issues related to charitable gift solicitation, acceptance, recording, and receipting. He will review the FundSvcs archives and his email folders to identify the most common questions from the past year. Plus, this year he has reserved time at the end of the presentation to discuss any related topic you have in mind! John plans to finish his prepared remarks by 12 or 12:15 PT, depending on the Q&A during the session, and will stay with us until 12:30.

John has agreed to start with a review of State registration requirements—something every nonprofit must do in each state that mandates it if they accept online donations. He’ll then briefly go over the list of IRS Publications that no practitioner’s library should be without. After that, he will discuss the 2026 quid pro quo rules, including related DAF rules (and bifurcation). Other planned topics include IRA distributions, corporate sponsorships, "mandatory” internships, charity auctions, and games of chance. Finally, he will answer any related topics you have in mind!

Learning Objectives:

To help newer Advancement Services professionals understand the numerous legislative requirements impacting our work, the session also offers an opportunity to explore complex issues and increasing complexities that can influence how a gift is processed and whether a donor can even do what they propose!
