Data Maximalism to Data Minimalism: The Pendulum Swing of Advancement Data Trends

Description: When did our industry start moving away from data maximalism and towards minimalism, and why? How does constituent identity data, including DEI data, influence this shift? Join the conversation and understand what questions to ask when acquiring, storing and using biographical data including DEI data. What can you accomplish with less data? When is it too much and when do you need more?

Learning Objectives

1. Attendees will be able to confidently discuss the history of this change within our industry, and identify trends, allowing for expertise and confident thought leadership within their own institutions and organizations.

2. Attendees will be presented with concepts that inspire critical thinking about the role of data maximalism/minimalism.

3. Attendees will gain an understanding of how DEI data is a key influencing factor on the acquisition, storage, and usage of biographical data.


Speakers 

Amy DaultreySoftware Services Consultant

Amy Daultrey is an independent consultant from the UK who helps clients resolve challenges with their donor databases and fundraising processes. She’s been following evolving data privacy law in the US and in 2022 created a white paper and case study that grew out of discussions with colleagues. Having seen the impact of privacy law on charities in the UK Amy is on a mission to wave red flags and help US organizations get out in front of what’s in the pipeline. Amy has been in the charity sector for over two decades, first in alumni relations and fundraising before switching to database consultancy in California in 2008 where she spent a busy 5 years working with a huge range of clients. Today she works with organizations across the US and UK. She lives in the rolling hills of southern England near Stonehenge.

Bill ConnorsIndependent Consultant and Trainer

Bill Connors, CFRE, is author of Fundraising with The Raiser’s Edge: A Non-Technical Guide (Wiley, February 2010) and is an independent consultant and trainer on the Blackbaud fundraising software Raiser’s Edge NXT and The Raiser's Edge version 7. Until 2005, Bill was Principal Consultant for Fundraising Systems for Blackbaud, having helped found the Blackbaud consulting program in 1998. He has been providing consulting and training on Raiser’s Edge in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Europe since 1995. He previously served as Senior Consultant for Fundraising Technology for Brakeley, Ltd., a London fundraising consulting firm. Having spent his entire career in nonprofit work, Bill also worked for Junior Achievement as the Director of Development in Arizona and as Director of Field IT for the national headquarters, overseeing the roll-out of The Raiser’s Edge in the field offices.
